Traffic Management
The Challenge: Delivering Subscriber QoE
The name of the game in mobile broadband services has become Quality of Experience (QoE). The availability of YouTube, Netflix and web TV services on smartphones and tablets has increased the need for a Quality of Service (QoS) that far exceeds the “best effort” level of service. Mobile subscribers are willing to accept nothing less than a fixed-line user experience, even for bandwidth-intensive smartphone applications.
Scrambling to meet demand, mobile operators have adopted intelligent, subscriber-centric traffic management solutions in their RAN elements (RNC, NodeB) and Core (GGSN) networks. However, in the backhaul network – the source of most network congestion events – subscriber traffic is managed with Differentiated Services (DiffServ)-based solutions. DiffServ architecture classifies and prioritizes traffic according to different classes - but lacks user awareness, and provides identical levels of service to all subscribers of the same class. More granular, and thus more effective, mobile backhaul traffic management has been, until now, impossible due to encryption and dedicated RAN encapsulation requirements.
The Solution: UniqServ™ Technology
Based on patented UniqServ technology, HSPA / LTE Congestion Relief solutions from Celtro deliver user-aware traffic management tools designed specifically for the mobile backhaul. UniqServ-based solutions overcome the inherent weaknesses of DiffServ with innovative User-Aware Traffic Management, in which each user flow is managed independently via a dedicated, tightly-controlled traffic management mechanism.
The Benefits
UniqServ-based solutions from Celtro stabilize throughput and relieve HSPA / LTE congestion, resulting in:
- Enhanced user experience – enhances user experience during congestion events by maximizing individual user data rates and preventing application packet loss
- Reduce network expenses – optimizes existing backhaul infrastructure, deferring need for expensive capacity expansions
- Complements end-to-end RAN QoS solutions – complements E2E RAN QoS solutions, adding subscriber and application management to mobile backhaul networks
- Service differentiation – classifies traffic flows for user application, then handles and prioritizes traffic for optimal service delivery and user QoE
- Fair-usage enforcement – throttles heavy users during congestion, while leaving normal traffic unaffected
