New opportunities…
The introduction of advanced cellular technologies like WCDMA and HSDPA promises to make high capacity, broadband-like mobile content delivery a reality.
Lucrative broadband mobile services are already creating revenue streams for operators as the rollout HSDPA networks begins – enabling delivery of DSL-like bandwidth to mobile handsets. Future releases of mobile radio standards and technologies are expected to deliver 30-100 megabit capacity to handsets.
This increased bandwidth creates a world of new opportunities and revenue models for operators – including delivery of high-speed data, video and TV to end user handsets.
… And a new bottleneck
These new technologies relieve the traditional cellular bottleneck at the radio segment or air interface. However, one of the primary challenges now facing providers is the new "weakest link" – the backhaul network. Traditional wireline and microwave backhaul technology cannot easily scale up to meet the capacity requirements of broadband wireless. Thus, cellular backhaul networks have become the new bottleneck for providers – impeding large-scale rollout of high-profile, revenue generating services.
